An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth es un fascinante documental sobre el calentamiento global, realizado por el director Davis Guggenheim. La película se basa en una presentación de multimedia que ha dado Al Gore en más de mil ciudades de todo el mundo en los últimos años, y presenta un cuadro preocupante de la destrucción que está causando el calentamiento global y del horrible futuro que nos espera si este problema no se aborda. A pesar de que la película tiene serios problemas, es muy importante verla y participar en la discusión y el debate sobre lo que se necesita para salvar el planeta… y traducirlos en acción.
En estos momentos, en que la verdad científica está bajo ataque y en que el gobierno de Bush impide que los científicos de las comisiones oficiales digan la verdad, censura informes oficiales y sabotea los tratados internacionales, An Inconvenient Truth defiende, populariza y presenta con claridad la ciencia del calentamiento global. El presentador derechista Glenn Beck dijo que la película era como la propaganda nazi. El periodista Holman Jenkins escribió en el Wall Street Journal: “La narrativa de Gore no es ciencia, es ciencia ficción”.
La película presenta conceptos científicos y evidencia del calentamiento global de una forma clara, concisa e interesante. Tiene excelentes tomas de la naturaleza, gráficas y animación para presentar evidencia compleja. Hasta tiene un segmento de Futurama.

Efectos del calentamiento global

“No conozco ninguna otra película en que la presentación de una gráfica produzca murmullos de horror, pero cuando salen en la pantalla las líneas rojas que muestran el aumento de la tasa de emisiones de dióxido de carbono y el correspondiente aumento de temperaturas, el efecto es electrizante”, escribió A.O. Scott en una reseña de la película en el New York Times. Gore presenta una gráfica que demuestra una conexión entre los niveles de CO₂ y la temperatura en el curso de 600,000 años basada en muestras de hielos polares profundos.1 En ese lapso de tiempo los niveles de CO₂ han oscilado entre 180 y 280 partes por millón (ppm). El nivel de hoy es de casi 400 ppm, muy por encima de lo que se ha visto en más de medio millón de años. Gore señala que ese nivel subirá a 600 ppm si no se hace algo rápidamente.
Gore describe los cambios dramáticos que se están operando en el mundo a causa del calentamiento global. Muestra fotos de hace 15 a 30 años de glaciares de más de 10,000 años y las compara con fotos de los últimos dos años. ¡Es impresionante ver lo rápido que están desapareciendo! También vemos las famosas “nieves del Kilimanjaro” en 1970 y luego en 2005: solo queda una pequeña franja de hielo.
La película explica que muchos estudios científicos recientes confirman que la capa superior de los mares se ha calentado y que eso produce huracanes más fuertes. No es posible atribuir al calentamiento global una determinada tormenta, como Katrina, pero un estudio del Massachusetts Institute of Technology indica que las tormentas que se forman en los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico han aumentado un 50% de duración e intensidad desde los años 70.2 Todo eso causa más dificultades y sufrimiento humano.
La evidencia indica que el calentamiento global ha llevado a un 20% de aumento de lluvia en el mundo en los últimos 100 años; pero no ha sido uniforme y, por el contrario, unas zonas del mundo han sufrido sequías.
Es impresionante ver el papel que han desempeñado las sequías en los horrores actuales que sufre África, algo que según los imperialistas se debe a que los africanos son “incivilizados” y no a lo que ha hecho el Occidente. En la región del Níger, millones sufren de desnutrición y muchos niños mueren a diario. En Darfur se está cometiendo un genocidio horrible. Las causas del genocidio y de la hambruna son complejas, pero un importante factor son los cambios que ha causado el calentamiento global. El lago Chad, que era el sexto del mundo, hoy es una veinteava parte de lo que era y el resto está cubierto de dunas de arena. Eso ha llevado a la destrucción de la pesca, la escasez de agua para el regadío, malas cosechas y el desplazamiento de millones a causa del hambre.
Los cambios del calentamiento global apenas se empiezan a ver. Los científicos predicen estos cambios en el futuro: extinción en masa de especies, inundaciones de las costas por el descongelamiento de los casquetes polares, epidemias de enfermedades infecciosas y la destrucción de los arrecifes de coral por el aumento del CO₂ en el agua del mar.
Si el calentamiento global derrite los glaciares, se presentarán problemas serios de escasez de agua. Los glaciares del Himalaya, de los más afectados por el calentamiento global, son la fuente de agua potable para más del 40% de la población mundial. En los próximos 50 años, esa enorme porción de la humanidad podrá tener una fuerte escasez de agua potable y también escasez de alimentos por la falta de agua para irrigación.

A History Of Violence

Sinopsis:

Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) lleva una vida feliz y tranquila con su mujer (Maria Bello) y sus dos hijos en la pequeña ciudad de Millbrook (Indiana) hasta que una noche su existencia idílica se ve destrozada cuando frustra un violento intento de robo en su restaurante. Tom percibe el peligro y salva a sus clientes y amigos matando en defensa propia a dos criminales buscados por la justicia. Aplaudido como un héroe, la vida de Tom cambia de la noche a la mañana y de repente se encuentra convertido en el centro de atención de todos los medios de comunicación.
